In-House Registered Midwife Program
In-House Registered Midwifery (IHRM) is an innovative and successful program launched in September 2023 at Victoria General Hospital (VGH). It is one of the first programs of its kind in British Columbia. The IHRM team is made up of Registered Midwives from across Vancouver Island who provide in-house coverage on Labour & Delivery in 12-hour shifts.

IHRMs are immediately available when clients present to hospital in labour or require urgent assessment. They consistently attend Acorn clients in labour and support them through birth, welcoming their babies into the world.

Beyond hospital-based care, the IHRM role is an essential support to Victoria’s community midwifery department. IHRMs help sustain community midwifery practice by ensuring timely, comprehensive, and supportive care for community clients who require hospital services at VGH. IHRM midwives are a very experienced group of providers with expanded midwifery skills.
Our In-House Midwife Team
Your In-House Registered Midwives are midwives who may hold midwifery roles in other communities or clinics. They are dedicated to providing safe, equity-focused, trauma-informed, and compassionate care to all clients who enter our healthcare system.
