Victoria Perinatal Society
Acorn Perinatal Care
In March 2023, during the height of the perinatal care crisis on Vancouver Island, a passionate group of midwives and family physicians stepped up to support pregnant people in Victoria without access to perinatal care due to provider shortages in the community. Victoria Perinatal Service, formerly known as the Unattached Clinic, was founded and operated out of Victoria General Hospital's Antenatal Assessment Unit. The service grew to provide comprehensive, collaborative, and thoughtful healthcare to patients requiring support navigating and accessing our healthcare system. VPS was closed in December 2025.
Acorn Perinatal Care has been founded as a continuation and in the spirit of Victoria Perinatal Service in the community. This is a community-led private practice providing comprehensive perinatal care, co-located within Island Sexual Health Society. Our clinic is located on Quadra St, near McKenzie in Victoria, BC. We are accessible by major bus routes and has accessible spaces for all clients.
Acorn Perinatal Care
Your Pathway Through Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpartum Care
Prenatal Care

-
When you are accepted into care at Acorn, you will be assigned to one of our small teams of midwives. Our midwives work in teams of one or two midwives.
-
We are all dedicated to safe, family-centred, trauma-informed, and culturally safe perinatal care. You will be followed closely through your pregnancy to check on the wellbeing of you and your baby.
-
It may be recommended that you receive close follow-up in the frist trimester through the Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic and weekly ultrasounds in the first trimester with Full Circle Perinatal Care.
-
All of our clients are offered all available prenatal testing and ultrasounds in pregnancy.
-
If you require assessment in the hospital at any time, you will be assessed by one of our In-House Registered Midwives.
-
Together with your midwives, you will be supported through all stages of pregnancy to prepare for the birth of your baby.
-
If you are arriving in Victoria to birth at any gestation due to medical or geographic relocation for birth, we will provide care for you and your baby. If you are not eligible for midwifery care due to medical complications or gestational age of baby, but would like midwifery care for labour, birth, and postpartum, we are happy to support you alongside your physician team.
Birth Care

-
While pregnant or when in labour and requiring an assessment at the hospital, you will be assessed and cared for by the In-House Registered Midwife who is at the hospital each day.
-
In-House Registered Midwives work in 12 hour shift rotations and are always available. Some of our Acorn Midwives also provide care as In-House Registered Midwives.
-
Once your baby has been born, your care will continue with your team at Acorn.
-
Our In-House Registered Midwives will provide care for you during labour and birth. With your In-House Midwife, you can birth vaginally or surgically, and can receive analgesia, including epidural, if you wish. All medical options are available to you under the care of a Registered Midwife.
Postpartum Care

-
Once your baby is here and you have birthed, your care will resume with your Acorn midwife team.
-
Your midwife team will see you in the hospital within 24 hours of your baby's birth. They will also discharge you from the hospital when ready, provide home visits and lactation support to ensure everyone is doing well.
-
Once the family is recovered, the midwife team will provide well-baby clinic visits or group postpartum visits to build postpartum community and ensure both birther and baby are thriving.
-
If you are not local to Victoria, your assigned Acorn Midwife Team will provide postpartum care for you and your baby until you both are well enough to return to your home community.
